Summer will be here before you know it. Besides planning those summer trips, you’ll need to prepare for the possibility of wildfires. Wildfires can spread very quickly and be difficult to contain, but there are a few things you can do to prepare and keep yourself and your family safe.
Here are four tips you can use to be ready in the event that you’re affected by wildfires.
One of the best things you can do to prepare yourself and your family for a wildfire is to create a wildfire action plan ahead of time. Every family’s plan will look a little different, but all of them should include:1
In addition to having a wildfire action plan, you should make sure your home is fully equipped with fire extinguishers and that everyone knows where to find the shut-off controls for the gas, electric, and water.1
Thanks to today’s technology and social media platforms, it’s easier than ever to track the movement of wildfires to help you stay informed.
You can track wildfires using the Google Maps app on your phone. There are many layers you can add, including wildfires. With this filter, you can see all the wildfires in your area and how big they are. To access this layer, click on the button on the top right of the map below the search bar, which has a diamond logo layered over another diamond.
Another smart thing to do when preparing for wildfire season is to make digital copies of all your important documents. This includes financial statements, birth certificates, mortgage paperwork, and any other documents that are difficult to replace. You can scan these into your computer or use your phone to make digital copies. Digitizing these documents will make it easier to access important information should something happen to your home.1
Put together emergency supply kits for everyone in your family and keep them easily accessible. Your kits will vary depending on your needs, but here are some general things that Cal Fire suggests you include:
Medications are especially important to have on hand. You may be able to get a prescription for an emergency inhaler or other prescriptions to add to your kit, so you don’t have to worry about keeping your daily medication in your kit.1
It’s best to be prepared for a wildfire even before you need to be. By taking just a few precautions ahead of time, you’ll be ready, regardless of what Mother Nature throws at you.
